As the timeless Kei Po metamorphosed from just a regular Chinese-style dress into a sensual symbol of eastern female beauty in the early decades of the 20th century, the body-hugging one-piece is taken back to the streets in recent years to fit the ongoing nostalgia trends. Every Hong Kong lady dreams of becoming the slender Maggie Cheung in her 23 custom-made Kei Pos, perfectly outlining her curves with subtleness, in the classic local movie “In the Mood for Love” (花樣年華). Mr. Kan Hon-Wing, nestled in the city’s oldest Kei Po store at Queen’s Road West (皇后大道中), is making their dream possible with needle and thread.
Mei Wah, opened by Kan’s grandfather, has been a living witness of the rise and fall of the symbolic fashion over the past 80 years. The wearable art could only be passed on to the third generation of the family with patience, passion and skillful hands. The store is tiny but sumptuous in a way that all walls are all covered with colorful garments and elegant Kei Pos of various body shapes. It is always the little things that prove Kan’s 50 years of professionalism: suited-up, silky smooth hands, and the made-to-measure tailoring without moments of discomfort. Many of his customers return for a reason.
The art will soon slip through his hands as there is no disciple for now – but Kan is determined enough to sustain the business until he cannot. Though the young ladies in the city have started to embrace the iconic fashion, hopefully it is just not a cultural fad. if you are interested in having your own one-piece, make an appointment and unleash your eastern beauty from within.
