Craft Beer Bar Recommendation – Many Local Bars Manage to Present Their Well-Curated Tap Line-up

More than a trend sweeping the city, craft beer has already been a growing culture fast and strong in Hong Kong. While more and more local breweries make their success with excellent quality and character, many local bars manage to present their well-curated tap line-up, making Hong Kong’s craft beer scene more flavorful than ever. Here, we give you a good list of craft beer bars to get into it. Cheers!

  1. Second Draft

Second Draft in Tai Hang is a chilled, comfortable and fun gastropub. It’s a nostalgic Cha Chaan Teng styled collaboration between Young Master Ales, a local craft brewery and May Chow, the Best Female Chef by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. With 16 taps offering mostly local crafts and a few guest import taps on rotation, you can find popular IPA, Pilsner, Berliner Weisse, or playful ones like the Comfortably Numb that consists Sichuan peppercorn and lime juice. Their food that comes with a nice Asian twist such as the signature fries and the fried chicken are must-try’s!

  1. The Globe

An amazing British gastropub in Soho, Central, The Globe is a modern, spacious place famous for their huge beer selections, excellent food, super friend staff and homey vibe. Listed as top 21 best beer bars in the world, The Globe will delight you with its rotating drafts that highlight plenty of local, Japanese, American, and European craft brews, in addition to their list of over 100 bottles. The food is nevertheless satisfying in terms of quality and quantity. Signature pies and chips with wasabi mayonnaise are must try’s.

  1. Tipsy Tap

Located in a rather relaxing area of TST, Tipsy Tap offers a cozy Kowloon atmosphere for beer lovers to enjoy a fresh brew with like minded people. Serving on tap 20 craft beers from around the world, the bar presents you a wide-ranging selection of top notch brews in various categories from stouts to IPAs. Arguably the best/ most popular craft beer bar, Tipsy Tap is without a doubt the stomping ground for beer enthusiasts as it also hosts events collaborating with different local brewers.

  1. Kowloon Taproom

As the sister shop of Hong Kong Island Tap House, Kowloon Taproom serves craft beer on 10 taps on rotation, covering various styles and local breweries. To help you choose, the menu shows a brief tasting note for each beer on tap. Some breweries such as Moonzen, Hong Kong Beer, Gweilo, Yardley Brothers and Lovecraft are solid. Serving pub food of sufficient choices, quality and portion, the bar easily land as the best option for craft beer in Tsim Sha Tsui.

  1. Peel 65

Defining Hong Kong hipster culture, Peel 65 is an instagrammable place for stylish local craft beer and local food with a playful twist. Complimented by the interior such as the neon sign, the traditional mosaic tile patterns, and old school dishes and bowls, the bar serves a nice selection of local craft beer on tap with a few guest taps from around the world on rotation. Be sure to flip over the menu to check out the bottled beers and food. They are as exciting, perky and surprising.  

  1. The Roundhouse

Let loose your craving for their Southern-style fried chicken and craft beer combo at the Roundhouse. Serving 32 tap beers on rotation that feature a wide range of brews, from local craft beers to global awards winning selections, the beer joint was listed as one of the Top 10 Beer Bars in Asia nominated by CNN in 2014. So pick your brew and feast on the ultimate chicken and beer combo. Their hand-battered, buttermilk marinated chicken is served with fresh-out-of-oven biscuits drizzled with local honey, what a perfect pub fix!

  1. Hong Kong Island Tap House

Located on Tsing Fung Street, Tin Hau, a prime location for foodies, this friendly, good old fashioned pub offers nothing fancy but the largest number of taps in town, the pub has 40 taps on rotation offering drops from the more established craft breweries, such as Young Masters, Moonzens, Hong Kong Beer or Yardley Brothers, and from the new-and-upcoming ones like Black Kite, Lion Rock or Citibrew HK. If you are in the right season, you can even try out the winners of local homebrew competitions.

  1. 99 Bottles

Possibly the smallest bar in Hong Kong, 99 Bottles on the steep Peel Street, Soho has only one small table, 6 taps, and a humble fridge for bottles and cans. But with the unbeatable vibe, it is hands down the coolest place to drink in town- Crowds jamming outside the bar, sprawling along the slope. 6 taps on rotation. And surprises to be found in the often overlooked fridge. All beers stay at a very reasonable price during the whole day. Awesome!
