Cha Chaan Teng is always a place HK people love and hate so much at the same time. We love how cheap it is, and how quick the dishes are being served, but those rude services sometimes just piss us off- and Australia Dairy Company, must be the representative.

Australia Dairy Company is no doubt one of the top Chan Chann Tengs in HK people’s eyes, you can tell by just looking at the line waiting outside the restaurant. It is all about the food there. Famous for its scrambled egg, it is the first Cha Chaan Teng in HK which adds cream into the eggs, making it extra soft and creamy. It also provides other dairy products, such as the steamed milk pudding. You may associate these dishes with Australia (well who wouldn’t if that’s the name of the restaurant?), but in fact, the dairy products they use have nothing to do with this country. It is called the “Australia Dairy Company” simply because the founder of this restaurant had worked on an Australian farm in the 1940s!

This half-century-old restaurant is also famous for its service. Just as mentioned, many people queue up outside the restaurant, so they want to serve the highest amount of customers within the shortest time, and customers need to eat quickly, like, REAL quick. HK people used to call this experience as “Light Speed Meal”, some even timed the average eating time is 10 minutes (may include waiting in line & paying the bill)!

Due to this high table turnover rate, you should have the lowest expectations possible for customer service, and it is completely normal if they blame you for ordering, eating or paying slowly (just don’t take it too personal). It is contradictory enough that HK people hate and love this kind of rude service-it may not be a pleasant eating experience, but it is definitely a local one.

So, if you want to avoid any blaming from the waiters, you need to bear these in mind:

  1. Waiters do not like customers to “reserve a seat for someone who is coming’,’ they would just assign another customer to come in and eat.
  2. Never ask them “What do you recommend?” They do not have the time to entertain you. Instead, we will recommend you here: the most common set is scrambled eggs, ham and toast, with a bowl of macaroni with barbecue pork. If you wanna try the dessert, steamed milk pudding would be a good choice.
  3. The restaurant is PACKED. Waiters are playing Tetris, assigning every customer into every seat, therefore just be prepared that you need to sit with someone you do not know.
  4. When you are finished, do NOT chat or scroll on your phone. Many are waiting outside, so just pay and go.

Scrambled eggs, ham and toast+ macaroni with barbecue pork SET (茶餐—火腿炒蛋、牛油方包、叉燒湯通粉) HKD46

Steamed milk pudding (蛋白燉鮮奶) HKD30

Sounds tough right? Welcome to Hong Kong! It would be a really local experience eating at Australian Dairy Company, hope you enjoy it!
