Established in 2013, Young Master Ales Brewery (少爺啤) has been one of the leading craft beer labels in Hong Kong.  Looking at their retro aesthetics, one might be surprised to learn that its founder Rohit Dugar is an Indian Singaporean who had worked in the finance sector before settling in Hong Kong.  The brand’s muse is a Hong Kong film from the 1960s named “工廠少爺 (lit. Young Master of the Factory)”.  Dugar was enthralled by the duality the protagonist, a working-class male from the industrial era, showcases—playful, bold, yet hardworking and proactive.  A true Hong Kong spirit.

With probably the largest brewing facility in Hong Kong, Young Master is capable of transcending time in their production.  They pride themselves on their bourbon barrel-aged brews—the Hak Mo Seung (黑無常, lit. Black Impermanence) series.  After receiving applause for their experiments with casks from an early stage, since their 5th anniversary in 2018, each year they bring out a barrel-aged birthday beer to have a good time with their loyal supporters.

Craft beer equals creativity and individuality, and with individuality often comes local inspirations.  Cha Chaan Teng Gose (鹹檸啤), one of Young Master’s signature brew, is their salute to the very local, old-school drink haam-ling-chut (鹹檸七, salted lime in 7-up).  Zesty with an acidic punch, the award-winning beer is a successful re-imagination of the long-lived beverage.  If you’re a sour ale person, you have to give it a try!

Already fancying a pint or two? Young Master’s masterpieces can be found on tap in their partnered taprooms around Hong Kong, some situated in prime areas such as Central and Mong Kok.  Many other bars and bistros offer Young Master too, but it’s virtually impossible to give an extensive list here so you might have to try your luck on that. Another option is to visit one of their two breweries in Wong Chuk Hang, where guided tours are available. (Perhaps a worthwhile detour if Ocean Park is on your itinerary.)  Or, if you’re thinking about throwing a party at home, simply visit their online shop!
