If you look for a space of serenity in Hong Kong, you will not miss to visit the Buddha in Ngong Ping which is internationally well-known for its mighty holiness. But you may not know that there is also a short trail called “The Wisdom Path” nearby that takes you to another level of peace of mind.
The Wisdom Path is a large scale outdoor wood inscription situated on a natural slope at the foot of Lantau Peak, which has the “Heart Sutra” carved on it with the precious calligraphy of professor Jao Tsung-I, a renowned master of arts. The path was delicately designed with the sutra spreading among thirty-eight timber columns forming an infinity shape ∞ as to symbolize the ever-growing lives and beings, and the highest column erected was deliberately left blank to express the core philosophy of the Heart Sutra – no hindrance in emptiness.
It took the government 3 years to build the site to retain the harmony with nature as much as possible during construction. With continuous careful and attentive preservation, this masterpiece is expected to last for a century. Carving calligraphy on wooden columns resembles the work written on bamboo tiles in ancient times, paying tribute to yet another traditional form of art we are familiar with.
Regardless of your religious views, you’ll still be able to enjoy the tranquility of the path as you pass through the sutra saying one by one, surrounded by the stillness of nature in front of the mountain. It is recommended to take the stroll slowly as you visit. Keep yourself hydrated if you visit in summer and warm if you go in winter.
