Hong Kong style old fashioned bakery is on its way out of this modern society. If you are going to visit Hong Kong, San Lung cake shop is a must-must. Everything there is as traditional Hong Kong as it is tasty.
Founded in 1998, San Lung Cake Shop is a Sham Shui Po staple. The Chinese bakery is home to some of Hong Kong’s best traditional pastries, cakes and sweets.
This neighbourhood gem sells a great variety of traditional Chinese sweets, from black sesame cakes to flaky pastries filled with lotus seed paste and whole century eggs.
It’s also one of the few places left in Hong Kong that handmakes and bakes its mooncakes fresh to order. A true labour of love, hundreds of these pastries are sold per day in the lead-up to the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Their mung bean paste with chicken fat is a popular mooncake variety not often seen in many bakeries. The traditional recipe San Lung sticks to has brought them fans from both older and younger generations.
San Lung’s bake goods are not cloyingly sweet and the prices are extremely cheap that you can’t find in else districts other than Sam Shui Po.
Not sure if English is understood there, but be bold, see what interests you and just point.
Traditional, down-to-earth, yet vibrant, it is nevertheless an interesting place to visit for getting closer to the local culture and real life.
