Owing to its mountainous topography and dense population, Hong Kong is home to some photogenic residential landscapes. Amongst them, Choi Hung Estate, a public housing estate known for its rainbow appearance (for “choi hung” literally means rainbow in Chinese), is definitely one that you cannot miss.
How to Get To Choi Hung Estate?
Exit from Choi Hung Station Exit C4 and walk towards Hung Ngok House (紅萼樓). Look for the entrance next to the building.
Surely sightseeing is our main goal. But I reckon you wouldn’t mind a great picture along the way for future show-offs, would you?
More often than never, we wish our masterpiece was not intruded by some random passers-by. Nonetheless, sometimes they give your image an extra layer of context. They bring a story to life.
In the following examples, I included a teenage boy playing basketball and a man doing exercise in front of the estate building to give the shots a voice.
If you are a photography novice coming to this place for the first time, here are some tips for you:
- Give your photo a storyline by including residents who’s carrying out their daily activities.
- Focal length choice: anything from wide angle to telephoto shall do the magic.
- Keep a low ISO during the day; use an aperture of f/8-f/11; aperture-priority mode or manual mode recommended.
- Take a long shot of the building’s features.
- Find a lamppost and use the premise as its backdrop. Create depth by using a large aperture.
- If you’re confident about manipulating your device, try moving closer to the building and make a stretched-out image with a wide angle lens.
- There isn’t really any requirement for the light. If weather is not in your favour, focus on the building itself and avoid including the dull sky.
- On the other hand if you’re blessed with a clear sky, you may squeeze both the sky and the building into the frame using an ultra wide angle.
A popular check-in location, it’s no surprise to find locals and foreigners alike taking instagrammable photos at Choi Hung Estate. If you think you’ve made a brilliant shot, why not send it to your model? It could be the start of something new, who knows?
Look around and you’ll see, not everybody comes with a bulky camera. Your mobile device can do the same work for you. At the end a professional equipment is a tool, but not a must. What makes your work stand out always goes down to your creativity and how you realize your thoughts.
