Visiting a dai pai dong is a quintessential Hong Kong food experience, like going for yum cha or to a cha chaan teng or snacking on street food.

Sitting on a plastic stool, head bowed over a bowl of noodles listening to people chat, laugh and smoke – you can’t get a more down-to-earth Hong Kong experience than that.

Although dai pai dong embodies the spirit of the city, these no-frills eateries have been an increasingly rare sight on our streets in recent years. Today, in Central, only several dai pai dongs, or street food stalls, are still open. 

Good news is, they are rather concentrated and easy to find. On Stanley Street, you can find a corner where the classic street stalls that offer cheap dishes and friendly atmospheres are hard to find elsewhere.

Among the numerous stalls on Stanley Street, Sing Kee is the most packed, with a wonderful diversity of clientele. I-bankers off from work mingle with bare- and tan-bellied grandpas over San Miguels. Hygiene is lacking, so look away from the kitchen, throw back a couple of $10 beers, and enjoy what you can. 

While it can be as cheap as $30 for a breakfast or afternoon tea treat, you can go for pricier options like their famous crab and clams. The salt-and-pepper pork was crisp and juicy, if a little over-salted. Overall, the food is extremely flavourful.

Again, cleanliness is an issue. Other than that, the place has a vibrant energy, and the crowd is excited and boisterous without being overly loud. The beer girl (another typical DPD feature) is bubbly and surely adds to the mood.

Other stalls are nevertheless worth trying since each of them have already stood the test of time. Just follow your instinct.
