Widely recognized for its homemade local eats with everything made from scratch, from the classic “Siu Mai” (燒賣) to “Leung Kau” (兩溝), “Lui Zai Kee” (呂仔記) is an all-time favorite eatery for the residents around Shau Kei Wan for almost four decades. But their food comes with higher cost due to their efforts and persistence in perfecting the quality, which is more than double in price compared to the regular ones. Do try out the signature if you have an extra penny to spend!

Entrance

You can get 8 pieces of Siu Mai – Cantonese minced fish dumplings for $30, which does not impress you with its serving size but the distinctive fishy flavors do stand out from the crowd. Unlike the regular ones blended with flour, they make the yellow treats from raw fishes through a series of steps that include removing the fish skin and bones, and kneading them into minced meat. Served with soy sauce and chilli sauce, the Siu Mais will surely offer a burst of savoriness, despite not being the prettiest-looking ones.

With homemade minced fish meat added into the Imitation Shark Fin Soup, the mixture – Leung Kau ($25) is surprisingly complementary to each other, as the meat gives a nice chewiness to the gooey translucent broth infused with shredded chicken, Chinese mushrooms, black fungus and glass noodles, that resemble the texture of shark fins. If you have tried the soup before, you will find their version is different from the rest because they also use pork bones to make the broth, giving an extra layer of flavor. One side note – it will be a bummer though if you plan to visit for breakfast or lunch as they don’t open until 2pm.
