For old-school Hong Kong pastries, you can’t go wrong at Hoover Cake Shop. Another oldie but goodie in Kowloon City, Hoover Cake Shop is a traditional bakery with a little charming corner store with all their baked goods displayed in the window.
Since 1977, their egg tarts have been a crowd favourite. Acclaimed by many as Hong Kong’s egg tart king, Hoover’s version of the baked goodies uses duck eggs to produce a smoother, stronger-flavoured custard filling.
Their heart-melting, buttery egg tarts are made in traditional moulds, of both the puff and cookie crust variety. While a huge group of fans fall for the cookie crust variety which is said to be the original of the Hong Kong egg tart, however, we know others will fiercely debate that puff is better. So give both a try and be your own judge! Egg tarts are best enjoyed warm so make sure you eat them on the spot.
You’d be spoilt for choice from their selection of retro-cakes. The choco chip cookies, walnut and almond cookies, and flower sponge cake, pandan sponge cake, coconut cream bun or the red bean biscuit are recommended, if you’ve got a sweet tooth. The velvety coconut tarts also draw in the crowds. Or take your pick from their savoury bun choices if you’re in the mood for a snack.
Be warned though – the bakery’s queue can sometimes stretch as far as the next block.
