Foxglove, a hidden bar on Duddell Street, Central that serves up classic cocktails in 1950s glamour and charm. Brought by the team who created the legendary Mrs Pound, this refined speakeasy is as suave, sophisticated and fun in the disguise of an umbrella shop. (Too bad that Mrs Pound is permanently closed. What a quirk place!)

At the entrance, you will see classy umbrellas displaying along the walls. Very much like a scene in the movie The King’s Man, you will have to poke one of the umbrellas at the slot and, yes, a section of the wall will open, leading you into the bar which interior feels like the luxurious first class plane cabins of fabulous 1950s. Foxglove nails the theme as well as the atmosphere.

Cocktails are split into three sections. The Bitter Truth in the “Homage to Prohibition” is a wonderful cocktail. The Kraken black spiced rum and the Angostura bitters makes a perfect match and the astringency of the orange and lime gives a fine ending note. The Guatemala Fashioned is a warming tipple that plays a twist on the classic Old Fashioned.

The bar’s extensive dim sum menu ensures you can have a full stomach. From Har Gow (prawn dumplings) to spongy cake, a wide range of dim sum are available. Some are surprising good with a modern/luxurious upgrade, like the Lobster Siu Mai and BBQ Pork bun with pineapple bun crust.

Though scoring high on fanciness, Foxgloves doesn’t fall foul of prioritizing concept over quality. It has earned the same hipster credentials that its big sister Mrs Pound possessed. Go poke an umbrella.
