Rare for visitors to see, Yau Ma Tei Fruit Wholesale Market is nevertheless a unique, vibrant place full of beauty and stories.

It is a century old market that started as a marketplace in 1913. Starting from 1920s, the government granted fruit vendors space on the reclaimed land in Yau Ma Tei and built buildings that formed the market we today know of. So just go in there and you will see the 2 or 3 storey high stone buildings and old trees that have grown into the structure. The site has been listed by the government as grade II historic site and buildings. For the nostalgic mood, in fact, some couples would even come to take their wedding shoot.

The market was able to load in fruits shipped by vessel and smaller boats as it was located right by the sea. But due to another phrase of landfill, the shoreline was pushed 3km away so the market relies on truck for fruit delivery. And the one and only fruit market no longer remained the city’s only source of fruit, after the rise of supermarkets, hotels, and convenient stores which have their own source of import. Still, today, the fruit market contributes up to 50% of our vitamin C intake.

The market operates day and night. In day time, it is for retail. But after sunset, it resumes a wholesale market that is super busy for logistic at midnight. Why nocturnal? Because it is the best way to guarantee the freshness of fruits when retailers get and sell them the next day. Also to avoid overloading the city’s transport system with the huge amount of fruit delivery.

It is a gritty place where you can see a real, vibrant scene of Hong Kong. Go have a look. Try some exotic fruits and find a spot for your best photoshoot.
