Situated at the small corner of the food heaven, Fishball Guy or “Yu Dan Lou” (魚蛋佬) in Cantonese is surprisingly not known for its fish balls but the Satay sauce that goes with the Hong Kong’s classic street eats. The aroma of the Satay hovering and the steam rising from the food cart make it extra tempting, not to mention the cheap prices. They don’t offer a wide variety but a few signatures: fish balls, sausages, beef meat balls, and beef omasum can already leave you good impressions.
With just $15, you can have two skewers of local yumminess in hand. The fish balls are the regular golden ones that you can find elsewhere but the beef meat balls are something to die for – they come in bigger sizes, and are rich in meat flavors and firm in texture that gives a nice chewiness. Well coated with rich, creamy and spicy Satay sauce, the skewers might overwhelm you with an explosion of flavors in your mouth!
The “Fishball Guy” is indeed selling food with a personality as the owner is known for his support of the political movement in Hong Kong. Not only does he give out food for free if anyone is in black that resembles the general look of Hong Kong Protestors, but also forbid people to order if not wearing a mask to prevent the coronavirus! The warning signs change all the time in response to the social situation so you might find something different next time you visit.
