Dream about surfing in Hong Kong? Big Wave Bay must be your best pick. With a cheap rental of surfboards and beautiful waves, it’s worthy of note. For non-surfers, the white-sandy beach’s also a lovely basking site.

The celebrated beach for chilling

Despite the far-flung location, many tend to spent their vacation here. Traffic is in fact convenient with the busy-scheduled minibuses and buses, which approximately takes you 30 minutes from the nearest MTR station. Compared with the adjacent Shek O beach, Big Wave Bay, as its name implies, possess with surfable waves that barely appear in Hong Kong. Lifeguard service, changing rooms and shower are all provided.

50HKD to rent a board!

Inconceivably cheap pricing compared with many places, there’re three stores with different types of surfboards for rent. Regardless of long board, short board, soft or hard board, rental remains unchanged – 50HKD for a whole day. A locker costs 10HKD while hot shower or a beach umbrella costs the same. If you forget bringing a mat, a pair of sandals or kickboards, don’t worry, just buy one there.

Sad to say, waves are seasonal that it’s mostly small in summer except for a typhoon approaching. The best period of time is from September to April, as the swells become strong and ferocious during these months. Otherwise, you may consider playing SUP or bodyboard when the wind is calm.

Basking on the white sand

To surf or to chill, is all up to you. In the vast expanse of the beach, you can grab a beer, read a book or play flying disk with your dog. There’s a café on the beachside you can order food or a drink.

If you want to get some exercise, I suggest you hike there through Dragon Back, the trail we’ve introduced in another article (Link).
