Chefs busy cooking in a big iron box painted in green, hungry folks waiting impatiently in long queue, and customers gobbling down bowls and plates of deliciousness on pavements – Bing Kee, sandwiched in between low-rise tenements, embodies all the necessary elements of a Dai Pai Dong and offers the most authentic quick-bite experience.
The open-air street stall has been in business since 1950s, initially offering locals inexpensive snacks and local drinks, rather than proper meals. Their menu does not have a wide range of choices but nobody blames given the size of their kitchen, and the handful of dishes are good enough to win locals’ hearts. Many opt for their Grilled Pork Chop Noodles ($25) with the signature silky-smooth milk tea ($16) on the side, which only cost $41 altogether. Their version of grilled pork chop is famously recognized for its chewy mouth-feel and strong peppery flavor, so much so that the broth is also infused with the spice without liberally mixing it. Unlike the cart noodles where you pick your choice of noodles, they only serve the regular instant ones but make a good match with savory meat.
One downside is that you might be drenched in sweats if you visit during the steamy hot summer but their iced milk tea might help cool you down. Plus, they do not keep your orders documented so you have to tell them again before you can leave the place – be honest though!
