The idyllic recess at the nook of Sai Kung fascinates people with its paradisiacal beach, the perfect view of Sharp Peak, and more importantly the palatable food. It’s the best midway site to take a break – let’s halt your step in Ham Tin Wan!
Have a nibble at the sweet stuff!
As though an oasis in desert, Ham Tin Wan is situated at the middle point of MacLehose Trail Stage 2, and accounted as an ideal retreat after those exhausting journeys. People got captivated not merely because it’s one of four most beautiful beaches in Sai Kung, but because of the delectable food freshly made at the old store. If you feel hot, it’s always good to have a red bean flurry cooling you down. But my favourite is the tofu pudding, softly made of fresh water, arousing one’s munchies after adding some sugar – definitely a highlight you should try.
The village with a few hundred years history
You may find the adjacent area bleak especially when those dilapidated houses scatter around, nothing but the beach. In fact, it was a lively fishing village named Wan (溫家村) where there were more than 700 inhabitants three hundred years ago – a history even longer than Hong Kong’s. Until the only pier was demolished by the frantic typhoon Wanda in 1962, the youth thus moved to other places due to the traffic inconvenience, leaving the elder and the shore alone.
More options for camping
Ham Tin Wan, simultaneously the official campsite, offers the isolated tranquility as it faces to the South China Sea and is embraced by the Sharp Peak, the 468-metre mountain hardly climbed. Uncontaminated by any kind, it’s best to swim during day time and stargaze at night. There are also two more beaches in the vicinity, named Tung Wan and Tai Wan, that are remoter and worth to visit if you covet an absolute silence.
Direction to Ham Tin Wan:
Since the pier hasn’t been repaired for years, the only way to go is on foot. You may first take the bus 92 to Pak Tam Au, then follow the MacLehose trail stage 2 passing through Chek Keng to Ham Tin. Or you can go from other direction from Sai Wan.
