The Blake Pier was located as the pier built in 1900 was originally named as Peddar Wharf being located at the end of Peddar Street in Central, serving as a landing place for new colonial governors and royal dignitaries. Being a roofless pier initially, it was later topped with an iron-steel roof in Edwardian style to provide travelers comfort from the heat and rains.
The pier has undergone several relocations thanks to the rapid urban development. It was dismantled and rebuilt in situ in 1965, but was again demolished in the 1990s to make way for the reclamation work of the Central waterfront. Its iron roof has been kept though – once transferred to Morse Park in Wong Tai Sin (黃大仙) as a replacement for the cover of a pavilion there; and four decades later being moved to Stanley and having been used as the cover of the present Blake Pier. The scenery of the Murray House and the pier does resemble the feelings of the old colonial zone but it would be quite hard to understand its historical context given the present locations.
This public pier is still in use, which can even lead you to Po Toi Island that sits at the southernmost tip of Hong Kong, offering exceptionally beautiful sceneries of the southern waters and funky looking rocks. It is for sure worthwhile spending 4 – 5 hours in between your Stanley day trip to explore nature. But the ferry departing from Stanley only operates at two different times: 10am & 11.30am on Sundays & Public Holidays and try best to catch the last return ferry at 4.30pm.
