Adjacent to the Murray House you will find a temple that honors “Tin Hau” (天后) or the “Goddess of the Sea” which is one of the most prominent deities in Chinese folk religions. It is no surprise Tin Hau Temple is scattering across the city as it was started off as a fishing village, for fishermen to pray for safe ocean voyages.

The entrance

Structured in the form of Siheyuan (四合院) – a classic Chinese architectural style where a courtyard is surrounded by buildings on four sides and colored in vibrant Chinese shades, the temple has been well respected by the residents in Stanley, being an ancient fishing village itself. Entering the main house through the courtyard, Tin Hau sitting in the center comes into view, which is also accompanied by other deities on the sides. Visitors can burn incense sticks and make monetary contributions as offerings.

Some incidents happened that have made this temple extra special. One is the tiger skin being hung on the wall to ward off evil spirits as it appeared in Stanley and later was killed in the 1940s, whilst the other one is the story of the unexploded bombs being dropped around the temple during the Japanese attack but nobody was harmed at the time. Despite not being graded as a historic building, the temple does have its charms and unique history.
