One of the most lowkey of Hong Kong’s speakeasies, 001 is easy to miss unless you know it’s there. But how?
Find a black door behind the market stalls on Graham Street. If you see a doorbell illuminated by a dim spotlight, you’re at the right place. But don’t buzz without a reservation – Yes, they have quite a snooty door policy, but that’s part of its cool.
In fact, the hidden bar doesn’t rely on its gimmick as a hidden bar to attract punters. They stand out with excellent cocktails and a strong selection of spirits too. Here lies one of the best Old Fashioneds in the city, while whiskey is taken seriously, which is evidenced by their wide selection of whisky where other bars cannot compare. You can even find the elusive Pappy van Winkle bourbon in stock at times, given that you’re willing to pay the high price.
The environment reflected its demure, sophisticated nature too; A mix between a gentlemen’s club and vintage library with classic jazz flowing through the speakers. It’s said that guests are supposed to remain in their own seat at all times, or milling around would get asked out.
Drinks aside, their infamous grilled gruyere cheese sandwich paired with tomato soup could not be missed. Buttered toast coupled with the lightly salted and creamy cheese is a midnight snack which neither ladies nor gentlemen could resist.
