So, you think you have tried the best fishballs in town? Not until you visit “Wong Lam Kee” (王林記)! Opened by a married couple in the 80s who spent half of their life hand making fishballs from scratch, the eatery offers the top-notch local delicacy with a sad story behind. The making takes a lot of efforts so much so that the couple had to work tirelessly over 18 hours each day for the production. The owner even lost part of her middle finger in a meat grinder as she lost concentration from overworking, but all her hard work and dedication have paid off now.
Their signature Fishball Noodle Soup (魚蛋粉) ($36) is the way to go. It might look simple in color but you will be surprised by the full flavors of fresh fish from the broth that is made from fish bones in your first sip. The fishballs are not the golden ones you see when grabbing street food; they are white in color, bouncy and firm in texture with a slight taste of sweetness. If you would like extra spice, add some chili sauce to top it all off.
Try their Rice with Braised Beef Brisket (牛腩飯) ($50) as well, which is in stark contrast to the noodle soup in terms of color and flavors but you simply cannot miss it out. The beef chunks being braised in multiple kinds of Chinese sauces are richly flavorful, succulent and tender, whilst the beef tendon can be melting in your mouth. The rice underneath also soaks up all the beef sauces, making it extra sinful. Don’t blame yourself if you cannot stop gobbling it down!
