When your tram slowly turns right into Morrison Street from Connaught Road West, your eyes simply cannot stay away from a striking Edwardian building standing proudly among modern skyscrapers. The Western Market has been an iconic landmark that represents the city’s colonial era, with its arched granite entrance and distinctive “bandaged” red-brick exterior embellished with white stripes, being prominently shown on its four corner towers. But what makes it extra significant is its twinning South Block which is a long-gone piece of its century-old history.

The current Western Market, aka North Block, was only the extension of its first building on Queen’s Road (South Block). Formally established in 1858, the original market hall featured similar architectural styles as the present North Block and was once a vibrant area full of hustle and bustle. As the city grew in population, particularly after the Tai Ping Rebellion in the early 20th century where thousands of Chinese refugees flocked to Hong Kong, the market could no longer meet the demands of the growing residents. The North Block was thereby born to feed more stomachs with fishes and poultry.

Urban development took away a lot of significant colonial buildings including the 120-year-old South Block, which was demolished in 1980 and replaced by the Sheung Wan Complex. Its legacy can only be found in the remaining North Block. Though the renovation has shifted it to a different focus entirely where art and crafts are the main businesses there, you could still catch glimpses of the beautiful interior structures (Take the stairs not elevator!), which could be some materials for your Instagram pictures.
