You can easily find toilets in Hong Kong, especially in tourist districts. We would recommend you to go to those in big shopping malls, in which the toilets are usually well managed, clean and free for the public to use. In fact, if you feel an urge when taking MTR, you can ask one of the staff and they will bring you to their toilets inside the station. We have a map (link) showing you all the toilet locations.
Other than privately run toilets, public toilets operated by the Government can also be found in all districts, including parks and countryside. You can find public toilets at the start of most hiking trails; some are even equipped with automatic water taps!
The installation of public toilets dated back to the early 1900s. In those days, toilets were not a standard facility at home or in the street. Residents tended to urinate in the street which caused hygienic problems. To tackle this, the Government decided to build public toilets in the streets. However, due to the lack of land, toilets were built underground. Since workers at that time were men, only male toilets were installed in the earlier days. A few of them are still in operation. One of them is located at the junction of Wellington Street and Queen’s Road Central, which was built in 1913. If you pass by, don’t mistake it as the entrance for metro! But do be prepared for some smell.
