Taxi – Information Details of Calling A Cab In Hong Kong

May 27, 2021

Taxi fare in Hong Kong is relatively cheap compared to other major cities. Most rides between key tourist spots (except the airport) cost less than HK$200. Before hailing one, here is a list of things you should keep in mind.

Hailing a Taxi

An available taxi is indicated by a red “For Hire” visible through the windscreen and at night an illuminated “Taxi” sign on the roof. However, you will have a hard time looking for one during rush hours (4pm to 7pm) or at night in Soho and Tsim Sha Tsui. Always wave for one despite the sign “For Hire” or “Out of Service”. The taxi driver will determine whether to let you in according to your destination.

If you are unable to wave at a taxi, you may try with local taxi app – HKTaxi, or simply Uber.

Charge and Payment

Taxis of all sizes are charged to the same meter. However, there are extras for toll fees, luggages, etc. The full list can be found at the door. There are also green and blue taxis in the New Territories and Lantau Island. It’s good to get on one if you are travelling within the area as they are cheaper although the operation area is restricted.

Red taxi

Most taxis only accept cash but do prepare to have a few $100 notes as they don’t take $500 or $1,000 notes. Small change of the exact fare is usually considered as a tip. E.g. If the ride costs $43.5, only $56 change will be given if you are paying $100.

Drivers’ Behaviour

Most drivers know basic English but it’s always good to have the destination in Chinese or show it on a map. Some drivers have a few phones mounted at the top of the steering wheel. They are always busy monitoring the next booking through taxi apps or chatting with other drivers, which is like talking to themselves throughout the whole journey. Be prepared.

Despite saying all these, we do have some friendly taxi drivers that show you some hospitality. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
