If you are a beer geek, and there is only one bar you can go to in Hong Kong, a wise choice would be the Hong Kong Island Tap House. It has the largest number of taps in town. A friendly, casual and easy vibe means that it is the place for many occasions.
Right under a flyover at Tsing Fung Street, you shall find the tap house exactly as you would expect. It is a simply good old fashioned pub. A playlist of 80-90’s Hard Rock. Sports channels on TV (Victoria Park with tennis courts and sports grounds are nearby). There is nothing fancy about the design (not instagramable at all), but the lines of different beer bottles and posters from various local breweries on both sides of the walls probably give you the best picture.
There are 40 taps in Island Tap House, serving the largest collection of beers in Hong Kong on rotation. Flip through pages of the drink menu and a spectrum of different styles, colours, hoppiness or maltiness would be available. Find your favourite from the more established craft breweries (such as Young Masters, Moonzens, Hong Kong Beer or Yardley Brothers) or from the new-and-upcoming ones (like Black Kite, Lion Rock or Citibrew HK). If you are in the right season, you can even try out the winners of local homebrew competitions. With the trend to expand the possibilities of craft breweries, non-beer options such as ciders (alcoholic made with fruit juice) and mead (honey wine) would appear occasionally. Guest taps from Australia, US or UK are interesting too.
The food is a little bit less innovative though. But please be sure that the classic fries, chicken wings and nachos are finger lickin’ good. They also come in good portions – the classic companion to your beer flight.
Hong Kong Island Taphouse is located in a prime location for foodies. There are many good restaurants nearby, from award-winning Wonton Noodle, Chinese barbecue roasts to food from different cultures, all within a 5-minute walk distance. It is very easy to get to by various modes of transport. Whether for big group drinking parties, casual meetups or just passing time by yourself, you can always find a nice comfortable seat at any hour.
