Here’s a crazy task: Go to Champagne Court, a building known as “Kowloon’s four floors of whores” and eat at a old, broken eatery in the underground storage area. Order their signature, a bowl of noodles famous for its fresh, healthy taste… and an unappetizing appearance- The “vomit noodles”.
There are many nearby bars, and people joke about it saying “It looks like what I puke when I’m drunk.” But those in the know would say “It’s actually delicious. Give it a try!” So maybe?
In fact, this 56 year old Bing Sutt is popular for this dish of its fresh ingredients and refreshingly good and taste. Generous amount of fresh tomatoes chopped and cooked into puree, added with eggs and seasoning, and poured onto a bowl of noodles or macaroni.
If you lack the courage to take the challenge, the classic sandwich and milk tea are always there to order, and they are nevertheless tasty.
Retro Coca Cola posters, yellow faded newspaper reviews, Rice bags and cardboard boxes, a boxy silver television playing the news- This place is so so old that it will take you on a trip back to the 1970s.
The eatery has suffered great loss from COVID that their consumption of tomato, for example, has cut from around 50kg daily to 10kg.
Despite the downturn, Lam says, Star Cafe will not be forced to close by the pandemic. But the plan to demolish the building eventually will. Built as a residential building, Champagne Court had changed from a light industrial hub to prostitution center. Now with most units vacant, the building is being bought by a major property developer, counting down to complete demolishment in the indefinite future. Meanwhile, Lam is set to hang it there as long as possible.
