If you are observant enough, you will notice Hong Kongers spend a lot of time traveling upward on escalators in the vertical city, not to mention the hilly terrace on Hong Kong Island. The Central Mid-levels was just a quiet neighborhood before the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator came into effect in 1993, breathing new life into the residential areas, and thereby SoHo – the famous destination for nightlife was born.
Coined from parts of the words “South of Hollywood Road”, SoHo is a bustling area of fancy bars and restaurants that stretches out to Elgin Road. It was the complete opposite of what you see today. Filled with street hawkers, Dai Pai Dongs, old tenements, and small shops, the area was no more than a typical old neighborhood. People were reluctant to rent a place there because of the never-ending staircase and steep slopes, but everything changed when the Mid-Levels Escalators opened.
The 800-meter escalator was meant to bring ease to the local residents, running from Queen’s Road Central to Conduit Road with entrances and exits at each intersection. The system started to become an unusual tourist attraction that led people to a wide range of multicultural discoveries that were not quite accessible, including Lan Kwai Fong, Tai Kwun (Former Central Police Station Compound), and even Jamia Mosque. And a few pioneering restaurant owners around Staunton Street were smart enough to treat this as a business opportunity and gave the nearby areas a new identity to attract foodies and drink-goers. As you can tell, SoHo is now a tourists’ favorite, even for locals.
