You just can’t deny the fact that Hong Kong is home to some of the most beautiful beaches! Many locals and tourists alike would flock to Shek O Beach, located at the southeastern tip of the Hong Kong Island, to untangle nerves and settle minds for a day from the city hustle. Overlooking a blue edgeless sea sheltered by a rocky headland, lying down on fine sand and soaking up vitamin D – it does sound like another way to appreciate the nature of Hong Kong! Shek O also offers more than you think being a residential village itself and its northern beach – Big Wave Bay is perfect for surf lovers, so you have no excuse not going!

Walking forward the sea
Sunday Shek O is always in a crowded vibe

The Shek O Beach – the southern beach of Shek O is more accessible than you think, which is only 30 minutes away from downtown. No worries if you forget to bring all the beach essentials with you, as there are stores at the spot selling all the basics. Public facilities are also available like bathrooms, showers, changing rooms and even barbecue pits. Try to arrive as early as possible though as the pits fill up pretty quickly and are first come, first served.

Family Fun in Shek O

If your stomach start growling after sitting in the sun for too long, hop over to one of those beachside restaurants or tuck shops for a local stir-fry or a quick bite. You can also take your time strolling around the little “westernized” Shek O village furnished with lots of multicolored houses. So, get your camera ready, lose yourself in taking hundreds of pictures with the eye-catching backdrop and be that Instagram star.

Another popular itinerary around the area would be a visit to the Big Wave Bay after the Dragon’s Back hike. As its name suggests, the beach is the favorite among the surfer tribe and groups of people surfing is a common scene of the place on weekends. If you are still hyped up after the hike, go rent a surfboard at the beach store and join the crowds to catch the best waves in Hong Kong!

Feeling hungry after visiting the beach? Take the bus back to Shaukeiwan and hit the famous food street of the Main Street East with our recommendations here (links to relevant articles) for the best bites!

Remarks:

  1. Unless you drive to the Shek O Beach, you will be greeted by some locals trying to make you rent their beach equipment once you get off from the bus. They can be quite demanding tracing you but need not to be frightened – just walk away if you don’t need one.
  2. You will be closely watched – as lifeguard services are available at both Shek O Beach and Big Wave Bay during swimming seasons from April to October.

Getting there: Take MTR to Shaukeiwan Station and grab bus no.9 or red minibus from Exit A. The whole journey to the last stop should take about 30 minutes.
