Hong Kong is well-known for her hectic cityscape, but maybe not the fact that she actually comprises over 250 islands. Any fan of boat trips, nature lover or ocean fanatic shouldn’t miss the amusing experience of island hopping in Sai Kung.
Sai Kung, a peninsula on the eastern side of Hong Kong, is surrounded by numerous spectacular islands. Once you get to Sai Kung, walk towards the pier where you would see a crowd of friendly ship owners eagerly introducing different boat tours to you. Travellers who wanna explore more islands with higher flexibility may hire a private boat. But if you’re looking for a low-budget option, you may choose the most popular route which takes tourists to land on two islands and passes by sightseeing spots full of extraordinary rocks.
After cruising on the waves for a few minutes, you will reach your first destination – Sharp Island. The first attraction Half Moon Bay is a sandy beach with crystal-clear water where you may enjoy sun-basking, swimming and barbecuing. What is worth noticing is that the island is designated as the Sharp Island Geopark of Hong Kong and visitors can literally walk from one island to another. Make sure to stroll along the Sharp Island Geo Trail with the intriguing “pineapple bun rocks” and pass through the tombolo during low-tide period to reach another islet Kiu Tsui before you return to the pier.
Before you get off the boat again for another island, let’s take some moments to appreciate the fascinating rocks and unpopulated islands along your way. Your guide will introduce you Elephant Trunk Cave, Robot Cave and Bat Cave. Feel free to use your imagination when observing other magnificent sea caves, sea cliffs and the hexagonal rock columns.
The next stop is Salt Island. Wondering if there’s salt on the island? Yes! The island was given the name Salt because it became an important salt-production site 300 years ago, and you may still see the salt-making process there today. Then there comes a little surprise, St. Joseph Chapel. You may not have expected a chapel on this remote island, but actually most villagers there were Catholics since the preaching of European missionaries in the 19th century. Don’t forget to take pictures of this Grade III Historic Building before you end your trip.
Congratulations! You’ve finished encompassing Sai Kung Peninsula and returned to your starting point. Still have plenty of time? Explore Sai Kung Centre to enjoy the holiday vibe!
