Congee base hot pot, which uses rice porridge as the broth to cook, has become popular in recent years. Congee hotpot indeed originates from Shunde in Guangdong Province, where people love their congee and food so much that they put seafood, meat and vegetables in congee, so that they can enjoy the food and finish the congee at once. Rice Sweet Hotpot has brought this cuisine all the way to Hong Kong so now we can enjoy it just in our neighbourhood.
They serve at a fixed price per head (~HKD 200). You will get to choose what to go with the congee base (usually a crab or lobster with clams), pick 5 out of 7 options of seafood (subject to availability: abalone, shrimp, shellfish, etc), and lastly choose 8 out of a few food selections including beef, pork and dumplings. They also provide a portion of diced vegetables (taro, pumpkin and sweet corn) to cook in the rice porridge base, to give another layer of flavor in it.
Be mindful that the whole point of congee base hot pot is to leave all the flavors from the food you cook in the congee base and we eat the congee at last. So don’t forget to finish up the congee base before you go.
This is definitely a must-try for seafood lovers. Quite a few reviews described Rice Sweet Hot Pot as worthwhile and a good deal with its pricing. Reservation is highly recommended, even though they have a few branches in Hong Kong. They are best for groups, so do expect a busy and noisy environment with crowded seatings. But the food is assured to be good and you will be amazed with the final product after a while of cooking and eating. It’s like you have made a bowl of wonderful congee without spending a huge effort but eating.
