Hate to say this, but if you let cook food centre slip from your food tasting journey in Hong Kong, you are missing out.

So what is a cooked food centre?

A cooked food center is just like a local, grassroots food court that is located not in a shopping centre but right above the wet market. A common hall full of tables and plastic stools, surrounded and shared by many food stalls serving different styles of food, from wonton soup to classy Canton seafood specialties, of huge portion at probably the cheapest price in town. No wonder it is the grassroots’ food paradise.

Pei Ho Street Cooked Food Centre is another food jungle that will overwhelm you with flavor and localness. Situated in Sham Shui Po, the food you can find there very much reflects the character of the old town while inherits the essence of traditional Hong Kong culinary from the good old days. Cheap but fresh, authentic, and of loads of heart.

Starting from lunch time til the afternoon, folks will be enjoying delicate seafood and cold beer. After sunset, the place will be so crowded with people that as you open the door and walk in, you will be swallowed by the wave of noise as well as the overpowering festive atmosphere.

Since all of the food stalls have stood the test of time, it’s totally fine to pick one by instinct. Quite contradicting to our common doubt, here, even the first stall name Dai Lee (大利) at the entrance is trustworthy. The assorted stir-fry (小炒王), the sweet and sour pork (咕嚕肉), and the deep fried squid (椒鹽鮮魷) are the classics that can easily make your night.

Find your way to try, and don’t be intimidated by the young big lady boss who seems aggressive and rude only when hectic. When she finally sits down at the cashier, she will probably be chewing a whole box of roast meat and offer a few pieces. Take it, say Dor Tseh and enjoy!
