Hong Kong is a city surrounded by the sea and comprises over 260 islands. Your trip in Hong Kong will not be completed without visiting one of these islands. There are numerous kinds of ferry rides available that would bring you a perfect day trip to get out of the hectic city.
Cheung Chau, Lamma Island and Mui Wo are three major towns located at the different outlying islands. These towns are less developed with no high-rise buildings and vehicles. Traditional businesses like selling dried and salted seafood are still available in these towns. To reach these islands, ferries are available from Central Pier, which depart every 30 minute and the ride is anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour.
Po Toi Island, known as the ‘South Pole of Hong Kong’, is the southernmost island in Hong Kong with residents. It’s a popular hiking place for its special shape of rock. You can get on board for ferries from Stanley or Aberdeen.
If you are into special rock features, don’t miss out the Hong Kong UNESCO National Geo Park in Sai Kung, where you will find unique volcanic rock formations, ancient caldera, sea arches and striking hexagonal rock columns formed from volcanic eruption 100million years ago. The best way to observe these spectacular features is to go on a geo boat tour, which departs from Sai Kung Pier all day long.
Dolphin watching tour from Tai O, the “Venice of Hong Kong”, is popular among the locals. If you are lucky enough, you will see some cute pink Chinese white dolphins which take the Pearl River Estuary as their habitat.
Reservation is not necessary to any of these ferries, just hop on and pay. Enjoy the rides on ferries to admire the sea and nature!
