The varieties of Cantonese dishes can be quite overwhelming for indecisive eaters but it would be a sin if you miss out on one of the classics that is considered as the comfort home-style food of many Hong Kongers – Steamed Pork Patty. It is also a dish that you can get creative with by incorporating different ingredients like dried squid, preserved vegetables, or salted egg yolk. People always say simple recipes are the most difficult to master – well, you’d better head over to Man Sing Bing Sutt (民聲冰室) at Tai Hang for their version of the Steamed Pork Patty with Salted Egg Yolk ($55).
An eye-catching orange signboard hung above the doorways of the 50-year-old restaurant will lead you to an even more eye-catching dish, which the patty is cone-shaped topped with a golden yolk, instead of being the regular round and flat one. Drizzled with their secret soy sauce-based mixture, the tower of meat looks extra mouthwatering with its shiny and pinkish-brown exterior as the fat seeps through, which makes it so tender and moist. Don’t forget to top it off with a bit of the savory briny yolk – and now you just can’t stop gobbling down your rice!
The restaurant is usually packed with people also with outdoor seats so suggest you go at quiet times to avoid the long wait. Plus, hop in for lunch if you are on a budget as it is $40 difference between the lunch and dinner time price.
