Made fresh daily from scratch, Venerable sweet shop Kwan Kee’ cakes and puddings has won both hearts of the locals and the recognition from Michelin.

On a busy corner of Fuk Wa street in Sham Shui Po, Kwan Kee has been selling traditional sweet snack since the 1960s. The shop is famous for their signature dishes, including glutinous rice pudding, steamed egg cake, and black sesame cake. The great quality of the sweets lies in the recipes passed down by the shop owner’s father- Fu Kwan, after whom the shop was named. 

Having seen his father worked at a small stall making and selling sweets, Fu Wing Cheung, the owner picked up the good work and continued to serve the folks with the sweetness of childhood memory. The result? Crowds gathering to buy until the 400 puddings freshly made each day are all sold out.

“Unlike many other shops, we grind our rice every day instead of using ready-made rice flour,” says Fu. Also, no raising angels are used, as the white sugar cake, for example, rises from the natural fermentation of the flour.

Though it is a cheap, small heart bite, the cakes and pudding are no fast food. The rice is ground and made into a milk at 2am every morning. In fact, the rice milk is even concentrated by pouring out the water. Then it is added with syrup and red beans, and steamed in small bowls for six hours.

Fun facts: though the sweets are called cakes and puddings, they are just snack but not dessert- Interesting. I know right? And, for Put Jai Go, i.e. sticky rice pudding, the locals love to pick the ones with seemingly more red beans. But guess what? Kwan Kee always has a standard proportion for the rice milk and the red beans. Ah ha!
