Not a savory dish. Not a dessert. More of a health supplement, Guai Ling Go, a.k.a turtle jelly has been an unique edible that adds to the fascination of Hong Kong food.

To begin with, there’s no turtle meat in the jelly. Instead, only turtle plastrons are featured in the recipe. This Qing Dynasty invention is still loved by locals for its healthful property. However, it wouldn’t have appeared in the city without the establishment of Kung Wo Tong, a clinic-herbal tea store opened in 1904 by the descendants of Yian Qi Chang, an imperial physician who served the Qing royalty.

Very classical Chinese style for the interior design.

Ever since Kung Wo Tong introduced their secret family recipe of turtle jelly to Hong Kong people, pimples had become a much easier problem to deal with. What’s so special about turtles though? It is believed that the animals have natural detoxifying qualities since they are cold-blood and live in swamps.  As a result, turtle jelly or tea is good for detoxifying and soothing inflammation.

Having opened up more branches throughout the years, the brand remains old school with pride. While many herbal tea stores had given up using copper vessels to save space, Kung Wo Tong still uses them to keep their product warm.

The machine they used to produce herbal drinks.

What also deserves respect is the hard work they put in – The turtle jelly is freshly made daily at 5 am, with a long process of boiling and simmering ingredients involved.

Besides turtle jelly, they offer different kinds of herbal drinks that are friendly in taste and ingredients. Pear tea, for example, is a good choice to soothe a dry throat. Go have a drink.

Herbal drinks.
