Being a classic breakfast dish in Cantonese cuisine, the Canton-style steamed rice noodle rolls is making a huge comeback these few years and there have been multiple new eateries across the city that only specialize in making the dish including the one at Tai On Building – “Chiu Mai Shek Mo Cheung Fan” (潮米石磨腸粉).

What distinguishes it from the regular rice noodle rolls? The texture and the in-house sauce make all the difference. As the rice grain is directly grounded with a millstone, the rice batter coming out of it would have richer flavors and smoother textures. Instead of rolling up the steamed flat batter using hands, they scrape it out, creating creases on the roll surface that holds the sauce better.

Canton-style steamed rice noodle rolls is getting very popular

“Chiu Mai” (潮米) serves a variety of options ranging from the classic “Char Siu” (叉燒) – barbecued pork, dried shrimps to eggs with bacon and sausages. The steamed rice rolls with Sakura Shrimp ($20), soaked in a generous amount of soy sauce mixture, is the one to go for if you like a bit of crunchiness and fishy flavors. But the one with beef ($25) is not very impressive as the meat taste is quite weak. Prices range from $18 to $30, which is slightly cheaper than the regular ones at Dim Sum restaurants, so try it out as an appetizer of your food tour!
