A visit to this renowned dessert shop is a must whenever you’re in Kowloon City. Established in 1955, Hop Shing is an institution in Kowloon City and one of the few dessert places in Hong Kong specialising in Chiu Chow (Teochew) desserts.
Serving up delicious, soul-warming sweet soups for more than 60 years, Hop Shing now offers more than 90 types of desserts, including both traditional and modernised items that allow you to mix and match based on your preference of ingredients.
Their signatures are lotus seed and something called “clear heart balls”(清心丸), which is best described as small dessert jelly cubes that has a slippery and gelatinous texture (it may or may not be every foreigner’s cup of tea). Yet, the homemade goodies are said to be the best in Hong Kong.
Since there are so many ingredients to mix and match which can be a bit dazzling, If you are willing to give it a try the jelly cubes, go with lotus seed and barley in green bean soup or sweet tofu soup.
Other signature desserts include black sesame dumplings, water chestnut sweet soup and green bean soup.
If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to witness the insane ability of the shop’s daughters being able to rattle off the dessert names by rote memory corresponding to the numbers on the menu. There are 90 desserts in total — you do the math.
