The briny fermented aroma of the shrimp paste usually hovers all over the fishing village and you may wonder how it tastes like! “Cheung Choi Kei” (張財記) seems to understand your needs and has created a famous street snack “Husband Roll” (蝦豬餅) using their own produced shrimp paste. Visitors attracted not just by its distinctive savory flavor but by the owner’s persistence in making the condiment in its most original way – using a stone mill to ground the paste to ensure a smooth texture.
The Husband Roll, being coined from the sounds of its Cantonese name that literally refers to “shrimp, pork and roll”, can already catch the eyes of curious souls. Wrapped in Indian roti and stuffed with lettuce and minced pork infused with the shrimp paste flavors, it is the fusion snack that has a little bit of everyone’s favorites. The freshly fried roti is crispy and fluffy, and meanwhile the freshness of lettuce can balance out the saltiness of the richly seasoned meat. There are some downsides though. As the fillings are not wrapped fully, you can be a messy eater trying to have everything in one bite. Plus, the portion is relatively small at its given price ($28).
If you are not a big fan of the shrimp paste, you are more than welcome to hop in the store for some souvenirs, that include dried shrimp, dried fish powder, and deep-fried fish maw. They are all great ingredients to add an extra layer of flavors in your soup or dishes!
