Nestling in a small beach, Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre is a cradle that has bred lots of superb windsurfers. However, what makes the centre legendary is the fact that it was where the gold medalist of the Olympic Games was born.
History
Established in the 1970s, the windsurfing centre is the first training school in Hong Kong. At that moment, windsurfing wasn’t popular among locals. Nonetheless, after seeing some foreigners playing windsurfing in the sea, Lai Gun’s affection towards this sport made him determine to promote it to his communities.
Having opened the training centre, Mr. Lai started teaching windsurfing to his friends and families with his infectious passion. Despite the limited resources, he successfully passed the skills to many students including his niece, Lee Lai San who has won the gold medal in the Olympic Games in 1996.
Although there’re no more local athletes crowned with such an honour so far, the school’s contribution to the sports industry should never be neglected. Even now, Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre is still providing various training courses and water sports equipment for rent.
Food and drinks
If you long for windsurfing classes, there are experienced instructors guiding you to lift a sail, steer and take off.
In addition to the water sports, the windsurfing centre is also a well-known café offering miscellaneous drinks and Western food. With a panoramic seascape from the small hill, you can enjoy sea breeze and the serenity which is barely found anywhere in the city. Being distant from the commotion with a glass of wine in hand, you will surely be recharged in the wake of this downshifting vacation.
