If you ask a Hong Konger what food they crave for during a long trip, they probably won’t answer “dim sum”, “fried rice” or any well-known Chinese food, but Siu Mei!

Siu Mei includes a variety of meat, for example, BBQ pork, roast goose, chicken in soy sauce, roast pork belly, etc. When you see a whole goose or some red pork straps hanging behind the glass of the restaurant, then you are at the right place.

A Siu Mei Restaurant

The most representable Siu Mei is Cha Siu (BBQ pork). The pork is first marinated in Cantonese barbecue sauce and honey for around 2 hours. Then, it is hung on top of the fire and barbecued for 45 minutes.

A good Cha Siu should be half fat, half lean, with slightly charred edges. The first bite begins with the sweetness of honey, then the pleasant taste of pork grease and a hint of caramel(from the charred edge).

Cha Siu is a perfect match with soft rice and fried eggs. The best way to enjoy the dish is to shove everything in one bite – the tender Cha Siu with rice mixed with runny egg yolks and soy sauce! Believe me, you will definitely fall in love with Siu Mei if you give it a chance!
