You might bump into The Yuan by chance, and be pleasantly surprised by the quality of their food.
It is a comfortable, cozy, but also a well-thought out place that specialises in unassuming Cantonese fare, with forays into Sichuan style. The restaurant’s Chinese name is a food idiom that literally translates to “natural juice, natural flavor”, describing proudly their original and authentic taste without using MSG.
The restaurant focuses on seafood but has many Cantonese classics on the menu. Recommended dishes include oysters with green onion, soy sauce prawn, and your choice of steamed seafood with rice. Though they might seem simple and common, it is fresh ingredients and fine seasoning The Yuan uses that make them excellent.
Both modern and traditional dishes such as wasabi beef cubes, plum-sauce flavoured pork knuckles, and cantonese steamed chicken are just as good. For the beef is tender with a nice kick of wasabi, the pork knuckles are beautifully glazed, and the chicken is extremely tender and flavourful with a generous pile of minced ginger and scallions sauce which is additive. For vegetarians, stir-fried broccoli with garlic is nevertheless delicious. Even the complimentary soup and puddings are also good, as with the general decor and service.
All in all, The Yuan is a solid option for delicious, authentic, healthful Chinese food in a casual, no-fuss environment. Though it is a bit more expensive than a Cha Chaan Teng, it is more than worth it. Oh, did I mention it is a Michelin restaurant too?
