When visiting a modern city formed by skyscrapers, you probably would like to go up high for a different perspective. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority Information Centre is just a great place for enjoying the splendid view of Hong Kong, without spending a dime. Definitely worth a visit, if you are tight on time.
On 55/F of IFC 2, the highest building on Hong Kong Island, the HKMA Information Centre allows you to oversee the wonderful urban landscape of the island and across the harbour while learning about money issues in Hong Kong in an interesting way.
The Exhibition Area comprises three sections: The Policy Section explains the work of the HKMA and related financial concepts; The Currency Section introduces the design, security features, production process and other fun facts about Hong Kong currency notes and coins, using educational games, multimedia displays and mechanical devices; The Historical Timeline traces the history of Hong Kong’s monetary, financial and banking systems from 1842 to the present, and reviews the key milestones of the HKMA’s work.
Another spotlight of the Currency Section is a new art installation “Chanting Notes”, a bauhinia tree created with shredded currency notes, which contrasts nicely with another artwork currently exhibited in the Information Centre called “Small Change, Big Ode” that is made up of Hong Kong coins.
To enter the HKMA Information Centre, you have to get an identification tag from security in front of the lift lobby in IFC and wear the tag during your visit. Admission is free. No photos allowed in the office/entrance areas.
Guided tours are available on a daily basis. Each tour is for a maximum of 15 individual visitors on a first-come-first-served basis. You will have to register with a staff member at the Information Centre 15 minutes in advance.
