No matter how long the line is, the food cravers would still be patient enough to wait outside the Tai O Bakery for its golden brown Sugar Donuts or “Sa Yong” (沙翁) in Cantonese. This traditional Chinese deep-fried dessert has now become a must-have street eat in Tai O, but its journey to fame doesn’t come easy.

The Tai O Bakery, established by a married couple, has been through ups and downs throughout the past 30 years. They used to just offer their baked goods to villagers but lots of them have moved out due to rapid urban development. Their sales even hit rock bottom during the 2008 financial crisis where visitors were out of sight – but it didn’t stop them from seizing every opportunity to make a living. From pulling a cart selling bread at the village entrance to creating more recipes, their hard work eventually paid off as their version of Sa Yong gained massive support from the locals.

As simple as its ingredients can be – flour, eggs, sugar & lard, rest assured that it’s worth the long wait if you go at busy times. Pulled fresh right out of the fryer and covered in granulated sugar, the fist sized dough ball is extra tempting with its sugary golden-brown exterior, not to mention the crispy-ness on the outside and soft-fluffiness on the inside. Do wait a little while though before taking the first bite unless you want to burn your mouth!
