It may be the smallest bar in Hong Kong. There is only one small table, six taps, a humble fridge for bottles and cans. But with the unbeatable vibe, it is hands down the coolest place to drink in town.
Taking the escalator to the Soho area, walking up to Peel Street and you will realize that you are not alone. On weekend evenings (and often on weekdays too), crowds would jam outside the bar, sprawling along the slope. Push through the people and you shall see the “99 Bottles” sign with a trippy green and pink light.
There are only 6 taps on rotation but all of them are worth trying because the bar man knows about beer. Chat up to him, he is friendly and he can always recommend good ones to try if you have no idea. The fridge of bottles and cans are often overlooked but you can always find surprises there. The frequently huge crowd guarantees that your pour of beer will always be the freshest. And there is no happy hour price because all beers stay at a very reasonable price during the whole day!
After getting your beer, grab a seat at the porch on both sides of the road, on the concrete stairs or simply establish your circle on the road. At chilly seasons it is the most comfortable Al fresco spot, while at the hotter times it is like a sweaty outdoor club and everyone just doesn’t mind at all and the beers taste even more amazing and soothing. The whole vibe of the area makes it easy to make friends. And somehow the coolest thing about the bar does not belong to the bar at all.
Soho is the mecca of bars and restaurants in Hong Kong. When you are done with 99 Bottles, navigate the slope, move along the streets and corners to hit up other bars and restaurants. The notorious Lan Kwai Fong is below the slope.
