Why not hiking around Stanley to enjoy the southern waters to its fullest? Just spend 1.5 hours to find the Rhino Rock perched on the hillside of Che Pau Teng (斜炮頂)! As wild as a rhino sounds like, the 1.5km short hike can be quite challenging and ambiguous to less experienced hikers but the ocean view along the way is for sure worth all the big steps and climbing.
To get to the starting point of the trail, you can head south and walk along Wong Ma Kok Road until its ends, or take bus no.14 and get off at Stanley Fort, where you will find a stairway on the side of the entrance of the Stanley Barracks.
The start is easy-peasy walking up on stone steps and concrete pathways but it gets much more difficult after reaching the peak where a radar station stands on site.
There is a small trail leading you down the hill but the path can be quite hard to tell – it takes around 25 mins to get to the rhino rock from the peak so one suggestion is to stay right and keep going down. You often have to walk on narrow and rugged paths with bushes and climb over huge boulders – please be careful with the loose stones too!
It is a perfect scenery of the southern ocean accompanied by Mr. Rhino! The tip of the rock does resemble the rhino horn doesn’t it? Some hikers even dare to ride on it to overlook the Stanley Prison and to capture the best pictures for Instagram – but don’t forget safety comes first.
Just a heads up that there is no shade at all on the way down the hill after the peak so please bring your sun-protection essentials. It is the same way going back to the starting point and there is bus no.14 that takes you to the Stanley Village if you plan to hang around longer, or all the way to Sai Wan Ho.
