Simply put, 65 Peel can define Hong Kong hipster culture. A very instagrammableexperience, and more – with stylish local craft beer and local food with playful recipes, it makes its solid stand in Soho, among tons of bars and restaurants conquering the tiny streets along the slope.
Using the Central-Mid-Levels escalators is an enjoyable way to navigate the area. Alternatively, it is definitely worth hiking up from ground, burning some calories before putting on more. At the upper part of Peel Street, the bright red neon light “65 peel” should easily catch your attention. The three Chinese characters 何蘭正 in blue are even bigger. It reads “Ho Laan Jeng”, a naughty phonetic play with the Cantonese phrase So Fucking Good.
The interior is a gentrified steal of Wong Kar Wai’s film. A dark room with raw concrete walls lit by a big neon sign of four Chinese characters, “Gweilo Leung Cha” – Foreigner’s Herb Tea, referring to our favourite drink brewed with barley and hops. The traditional mosaic tile patterns, the old school dishes and bowls and the waitstaff’s Cha Chaan Teng-style uniform all makes it even cooler.
65 Peel serves a nice selection of local craft beer on tap with a few guest taps from around the world on rotation. You can find a good number of fun session beers with playful ingredients such as the Yardley Brothers’ Lavender Saison or Mak’s Brewery’s Lemongrass IPA. Meanwhile, you can also get beers from H.K. Lovecraft who dedicated themselves to quality German style beer such as Vienna Lager. Be sure to flip over the menu to check out the bottled beers. They are as exciting, perky and surprising.
The food comes as playful and delicious as the beers too. Five Spices Edamame is my go-to salty munchy. We usually do not hesitate to ask for an encore. The Crab Rice Ball with Red Vinegar Espuma uses Chinese style dark vinegar, which is made with rice wine (comparable to Balsamic Vinegar). Its characteristic sourness adds sophistication and intensity to the dish. Their featurette is the vegetarian Peanut Tofu with Preserved Egg, which is a good balance of flavours and surely very instagrammable.
65 Peel is a cool spot for dating, as well as an interesting joint for groups of friends. Peel Street also provides many options for follow-ups, with loads of bars and restaurants down the street. Couples should be able to get a seat anytime while for larger groups, it is safe to reserve a table during busy hours.
