The Wanch – a subtle music powerhouse tucked away down the Jaffe Road in Wan Chai, has been raising the bar for the live music scenes since 1987, and has made lots of local bands’ dreams come true. Offering non-stop live performances 7/365 with different themes each night, The Wanch has gathered thousands of music-goers and party lovers in their cozy venue with locally inspired décor throughout the past 30 years. The best part is – it comes for free.
Walking into the space will take you back to the old Hong Kong bar setting – the walls covered with old movie posters entirely, furnished with old record player and vintage cross-harbor ferry chairs. The bar layout somehow reflects what the live music hub strives to achieve – music without boundaries, as there is no particular stage for performers where the audience can get to interact closely with them. From the Jamming Night, Acoustic Night to themes featuring rock & roll, American Blues or country songs, you will be convinced there are really lots of local good bands.
John Prymmer, the venue’s co-owner, has multiple identities all related to music – guitarist, vocalist, and a member of his band. Sustaining the music business has never been an easy job but his dedication and efforts in changing the live music industry and expanding the scope to local audience are apparent.
