More than a swathe of grassland for a picnic, Tamar Park witnessed the world-stunning protests in the recent decade since its establishment. All the connections and the breakaway between people and government once happened here.

Conception of the design

Since 2011, Tamar Park has become the important location housing the central government complex, which consists of Hong Kong government offices, the Legislative Council and simultaneously the Office of the Chief Executive.

The essence of the design is about “connectivity”. The green carpet connects people and the government, while the giant hole in the middle of the structure doesn’t mean emptiness but refers to one simple concept – “door always open”, hinting at the openness and transparency of governance. As everything is put together, the complete metaphor emerges: “Doors always open, Land always green, Sky will be blue, People will be connected”.

Occupied Central 2014

Splendid though the theme was, it came to a test in 2014. The massive democratic movement of Occupied Central took place in Central where countless protesters occupied Harcourt Road and Tamar Park. The vox populi besieged the entire central government complex in an attempt to fight for the right of universal suffrage and freedom.

Nonetheless, the government building has ironically been fenced off after the movement, none of the doors are ever opened again. The government’s refusal to listen to their people led to the segregation between both of them and the polarization in the society.

The world-stunning protest in 2019

The anger didn’t snuff out but simmer over the past few years until it finally erupted after the proposal of extradition bill in 2019. The new round of unprecedented protest began and more than 2 million people has changed the world. Tamar Park has again become the epicenter of the turmoil where thousands of tear gases were fired and police inflicted their brutality on the protesters. You are standing right here at the centre of it all.
