The best way to appreciate the breathtaking nature of the fishing village and the stilt houses standing over the waterway is to hop on one of those small boats. Within the 20-min ride, not only will you get a closer look at the life of the villagers living above the water but also tour around the major spots perched on the hillside: General’s Rock and the Tai O Heritage Hotel. Give it a go as it only costs you around $25!
As soon as you arrive at Tai Chung Bridge, you will find tons of booths with people peddling their boat tours with different itineraries, one of which even includes the Chinese White Dolphin watching. But do not get your hopes up as the possibility of catching glimpses of the heavenly creature is dim ever since the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, causing a huge decrease in its number. So, the standardized one is good enough to get some good views of the water town with some sea breeze blowing.
But sometimes things do come for free if you happen to visit the village on weekends. You can indeed catch the free boat rides that lead you to the picturesque Yi O – a tiny village that stretches away south from Tai O downtown at 11 am, 1 pm, or 3 pm at Tai O Pier. You can even go for a short hike along the coastal walkway or visit Yi O Farm before taking the free ride back.
