If you really pay attention to every food stall and restaurant you pass by, you will be surprised of how many Michelin restaurant there are in the city of Hong Kong. Sun Yuen is just another no-frill with the title that offers Chinese barbecue in Sheung Wan.
This traditionally styled, simple but well maintained barbecue shop has been run by the same family since the mid-1970s. Over the years they’ve built up an appreciative following so the small place fills quickly. The appetising looking suckling pigs are not the only draw: roast pork, duck and pigeon all have their followers, as do the soft-boiled chicken, the homemade sausages and the preserved meats.
Opposite to Lung Kee, where Anthony Bourdain visited during his Hong Kong filming session, Sun Yuen doesn’t miss out on endorsement either as it was included as a recommendation in the 2011 Michelin Guide. While Sun Yuen’s fans celebrate the roasts, however, according to many folks, its roast meat quality is more or less just about average compared to any run of the mill shop.
The Roast Pork can be great- When it is at its freshest , the skin is crunchy and the meat is juicy. The Cha Siu is not bad neither, if you don’t have it overly chopped-up and dry. The unstable and inconsistent quality compromises its taste.
While it said that one should not expect service at a down-to-earth place, it is more so at Sun Yuen. Still, there should be reasons for it being listed by Michelin. Maybe it’s the history, or the classic vibe that is becoming rare nowadays. Just a quick meal anyway, why not give it a try and find it out yourself?
