Red brick façade with a big cross at the center, red-green tiled roofs with a golden lotus at its apex guarded by dragons on two ends, and entrance led by a long flight of stairs – St. Mary’s Church is not only impressing everyone with its century-old history, but also its unique Chinese Renaissance architectural style that resembles the design of an ancient Chinese imperial palace – further proving Hong Kong to be the place where East meets West.

Situated in the midst of downtown Causeway Bay, St. Mary’s church originated itself from being a chapel providing a shelter for the refugees in 1911, and later became the present church in 1930s due to massive growth of the place. Now it serves as an important worship centre & community space for the nearby neighborhood.

Localization of Christianity is one of the beliefs that the church puts much emphasis on, to show the religion transcends borders and races, which you can tell from its apparent architectural features. Other than its captivating red brick exterior, the details of its interior will also put you in awe. Walking into the main hall, the church is structured in the classic basilica style and decorated with stained-glass windows, but embellished with Chinese traditional motifs. If you look closely at some other elements, you will notice the pulpit is carved with lotus that symbolizes purity and holiness in Buddhism, and they even use a Chinese style table as the altar. So, do hop over to the church to check out the East-West-Fusion!
